Apple may use Kindle screen technology in its foldable iPhones

For a long time, there have been rumours that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone. While we have no idea when it will be released or what it will look like, it is believed to be substantially different from the other foldable devices already on the market.

When Apple does release the foldable iPhone, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes it will have an E Ink cover display similar to what we've seen on Kindles.

Apple is evaluating E Ink's Electronic Paper Display (EPD) for use as the secondary screen on the foldable smartphone, according to Kuo. But, even if Kuo is correct, just because Apple is testing something doesn't imply it will appear in the final product.

However, as TechRadar points out, an EPD display is logical. EPD technology is comparable to Kindle screens in that it is made to look like paper yet consumes very little energy. This method, the out screen can be left on all the time without draining the power. However, because it will have a colour screen, the technology Apple is testing will go above and beyond what Amazon now utilises for the Kindle.

According to Kuo, a colour screen that can be left on all the time without draining the battery might be extensively used as auxiliary screens on other foldable phones, thus Apple may not be the only one employing it. If Apple is successful in using it, we may see other corporations follow suit.

Apple is testing an EPD with "tablet-like applications," according to Kuo, so it's unclear whether Apple is testing this for foldable phones or whether it's working on an e-reader or drawing tablet.

While EPDs have benefits, they also have drawbacks, such as low refresh rates. While they are excellent for reading ebooks, they fall short of full-featured smartphone interfaces that require regular inputs for animations and movies.

If Apple does employ an EPD screen on its foldable, it will be similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3's outside screen rather than the Z Fold 3's. However, only time will tell how Apple intends to proceed with this.
