The headline retail inflation rate in India fell to a one-year low of 5.72 percent in December from 5.88 percent the previous month, according to data provided by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation on January 12.
The current Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation figure of 5.72 percent is lower than the consensus estimate.
According to a poll, inflation remained stable in December at 5.9 percent.
CPI inflation has dropped for the third month in a row. It also comes in lower than the upper bound of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) 2-6 percent target for the second month in a row.
CPI inflation has now exceeded the medium-term target of 4% for 39 months in a row.

Food inflation fell to 4.19 percent in December, the lowest level in a year, driving the drop in headline inflation.
Vegetable prices plummeted the greatest, with the index falling 12.7 percent in December compared to November.
