The national capital and surrounding cities' prices for cooking gas that is pumped to homes' kitchens increased by Rs 2.63 a unit on Friday, marking the second increase in less than two weeks.
Indraprastha Gas Ltd, the company that sells CNG to cars and pipes cooking gas to homes in the nation's capital and neighbouring cities, has announced a price increase for piped cooking gas in Delhi from Rs. 47.96 to Rs. 50.59 per standard cubic metre. According to a tweet from IGL, the increase is intended to "partially offset the rise in input gas cost."
In less than two weeks, prices have increased again. The last time rates were adjusted was on July 26 by Rs 2.1 per scm. Rates have been rising for a number of months and have increased by more than 70% over the past year. In July 2021, PNG in Delhi used to cost Rs 29.66 per scm.
Following that, tariffs were raised nine times for a total of Rs 20.93. The present increase is a result of the government requiring the use of more expensive imported LNG to satisfy rising demand. Before supplying municipal gas retailers like IGL, state-owned GAIL averages out the prices of gas generated locally and imported from other countries. Before supplying municipal gas retailers like IGL, state-owned GAIL averages out the prices of gas generated locally and imported from other countries. City gas retailers in other regions of the country have been impacted by comparable rises in piped cooking gas (also known as piped natural gas, or PNG). Mahanagar Gas Ltd. increased the cost of CNG and PNG in Mumbai by Rs. 6 per kg and Rs. 4 per unit, respectively.
"We have made the decision to recover the cost due to the large increase in input gas costs. As a result, we raised domestic PNG by Rs 4 to Rs 52.50 and increased the retail price of CNG to Rs 86 per kg in and around Mumbai "In a statement, MGL stated. IGL, however, has not raised the price of CNG; it still costs Rs 75.61 per kg.
PNG would cost Rs 50.46 per square metre in Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, which are close to Delhi, while it will cost Rs 48.79 in Gurugram. Depending on local taxes, rates vary from state to state. Depending on local taxes, rates vary from state to state. The primary fuel source for CNG and PNG is natural gas. Since domestic natural gas production cannot keep up with demand, India imports around half of its liquefied natural gas needs (LNG).
International LNG rates rose to record highs in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, while the price of domestically produced natural gas was hiked to USD 6.10 per million British thermal units for the six-month period commencing April 1. LNG presently sells for more than USD 30 on the spot or current market. For the purpose of providing city gas operators like IGL and MGL, GAIL blends around 2.5–3 million standard cubic metres of LNG per day with amounts available from domestic fields. Each month, the pooled rate is set.
The pooled price for August is USD 10.52 per mmBtu, up from USD 8.95 in July. For the purpose of providing city gas operators like IGL and MGL, GAIL blends around 2.5–3 million standard cubic metres of LNG per day with amounts available from domestic fields. Each month, the pooled rate is set.
