According to Trai data issued on Tuesday, Reliance Jio, the country's largest telecom provider, solidified its market dominance in May by adding more than 31 lakh mobile users.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said that Reliance Jio added 31.11 lakh wireless users in the previous month, bringing its total number of mobile customers to 40.87 crore.
Debt-ridden Vodafone Idea's customer base decreased to 25.84 crore within the same time period as it lost 7.59 lakh wireless consumers. Jio added 16.8 lakh new wireless subscribers in April, compared to Bharti Airtel's 8.16 lakh month-over-month growth.
During April, Voda Idea lost approximately 15.7 lakh users.
In May 2022, there were 117 crore telephone subscribers in India, compared to 116.7 crore at the end of April 2022.
According to the TRAI, the number of urban telephone subscribers climbed from 646.99 million at the end of April 22 to 647.81 million at the end of May 22, and the number of rural subscribers also increased from 520.82 million to 522.92 million during the same time.

For the month of May 2022, the growth rates of telephone subscriptions in urban and rural areas were 0.13 percent and 0.4%, respectively.
At the end of May, there were 114.5 crore wireless subscribers, a modest monthly increase of 0.25 percent.
"Wireless subscription in rural areas also climbed from 518.88 million to 520.96 million during the same period," it stated. "Wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 623.78 million at the end of April-22 to 624.55 million at the end of May-22."
The market share of private operators in the wireless sector as of May 31, 2022, was 89.9%, while that of state-owned telecom companies BSNL and MTNL was at under 10%.
While 2,665 customers left Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), 5.36 lakh wireless subscribers left Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). Reliance Jio had 38.3 crore active subscribers, compared to 35.4 crore for Bharti Airtel (or 97.9% of its total user base) (93.7 per cent of its overall wireless base).

By the end of May 2022, there were 79.4 crore broadband subscribers, up from 78.8 crore in April. This resulted in a growth rate of 0.75 percent every month.
At the end of May 2022, the top five service providers held 98.48% of the market share among all broadband subscribers. Reliance Jio Infocomm (414.67 million), Bharti Airtel (217.09 million), Vodafone Idea (123.24 million), and BSNL (25.52 million) were the service providers, according to TRAI.
