On Tuesday, the rupee lost 3 paise to end the day at 81.71 (provisional) against the US dollar as rising crude oil prices on the global market dampened investor sentiment.

The losses in the local currency were however limited by a strong trend in domestic equities and a weak American dollar abroad, according to forex traders.

The local currency at the interbank foreign exchange market started out strongly at 81.58 but later depreciated. It traded against the dollar at a top of 81.57 during the day and a low of 81.74.

At 81.71, the local unit finally closed, losing 3 paise from its previous close of 81.68.

The dollar index, which measures the strength of the dollar against a basket of six different currencies, decreased 0.33 percent to 106.33.

Benchmark Brent crude futures for world oil increased 2.33 percent to USD 85.13 per barrel.

The 30-share BSE Sensex increased by 177.04 points or 0.28 percent to close at a new high of 62,681.84 while the larger NSE Nifty increased by 59.10 points or 0.32 percent to record 18,621.85.

According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net purchasers on Monday in the capital markets, purchasing shares worth Rs 935.88 crore.
