After months of stalled negotiations, four Malaysian mobile operators announced on Monday that they had agreed to use the government's state-owned 5G network. This opened the way for the rollout of 5G services to users.

Due to a deadlock between the government and major carriers over pricing and transparency, as well as worries that a single state-run network would lead to a nationalised monopoly, Malaysia's 5G ambitions have been periodically postponed since last year.

According to the government, a single shared network would lower costs, boost productivity, and quicken infrastructure construction.

On Monday, it was announced that Celcom Axiata, DiGi Telecommunications, Telekom Malaysia, and U Mobile have signed agreements to gain access to the 5G network operated by the government's Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) for ten years.

U Mobile announced that starting on Thursday, it would start offering 5G services to its customers on a commercial basis.

DiGi claimed that "improvements to a few key terms" in the government's "reference access offer" (RAO), a document released earlier this year outlining pricing, service guarantees, and other specifics of DNB's wholesale 5G strategy, were incorporated into the access agreement.

When Malaysia's communications authority gave its clearance, the amended RAO was anticipated to be published, according to DiGi.

According to Reuters, four significant telco companies have previously asked the government to evaluate the RAO, citing the RAO's pricing mechanism as "not commercially sustainable."

After agreeing to purchase a combined 65% ownership in DNB this month, Celcom, DiGi, Telekom, and a fourth company, YTL Communications, signed the access agreements.

U Mobile and Maxis Bhd, two additional significant operators, declined to purchase ownership in DNB.

Last year, YTL began providing 5G services to its clients. A request for comment regarding whether Maxis will be registering for access to DNB's network did not receive a prompt response.
