Exporters claim that Iran is not buying more Indian tea

Tea exporters claimed on Wednesday that Iran, a significant consumer of the nation's tea, did not complete the necessary proforma for purchases because they were awaiting the conclusion of a rupee-payment agreement.

Iran imported 26.18 million kilogrammes of tea from India in the year 2020, a significant decrease from the 33.75 million kilogrammes the Persian Gulf nation imported in 2020.

Arijit Raha, ITA's secretary general, stated, "We are hearing indications that Iran has stopped importing tea from India. The Tea Board has been notified and is looking into the situation.

He stated, "From what we understand, there are some concerns connected to the order of registration or invoicing that are not being supplied by the Iranian importers.

Tea taster and export marketing expert Sanjay Mukherjee claimed that his Iranian connections had informed him that they were postponing purchases.

They claimed to have heard that a rupee-payment agreement was in the works, eliminating the need for commerce to pass through third parties, Mukherjee added.

According to him, negotiations between the two countries were ongoing to settle commerce in Indian rupees as a result of the sanctions against Iran.

Indian Tea Exporters Association (ITEA) chairman Anshuman Kanoria stated that the group is expecting clarification from the Tea Board in this regard.
